The title Learned Hopefulness refers to the psychological concept of “learned hopelessness.” In this exhibition, Noah Kim Spaans explores their own learned behaviors and thought patterns that arose during depression, with a focus on dismantling those patterns. With this, they aim to take a hopeful view on the recovery from mental health issues. They want to show through their work that changing small habits (no matter how deeply ingrained) can make a big difference. And that this can be a significant step towards self-acceptance and happiness.
If learned hopelessness exists, it is also possible to teach yourself hope.
