Lucas Mergler’s work is about using the space and shape of the human body. Mergler explores the relationship between positive and negative space. And wonders what volume a body occupies in space. This often results in abstract sculptures in which each work contains a reference to the artist’s own body. Recently, Mergler has been working on the expansion of that space and is further researching its shape. In human-sized works he uses materials such as lead, wood, plaster, clay and concrete. According to Mergler, it is important that the artist constructs the works by hand in order to get a stronger relationship with the material. By working with different materials, he tries to find a form that people can relate to. Mergler names the volume of a body and transforms it into a form that emphasizes its space.
‘Rebirth‘ shows what form the body takes in the captivity of it’s material. “I started by drawing out my own body in the fetal position, and enlarged this form into a massive-looking sculpture that crawled up from the ground and came to rest in this shape. The work seems to have solidified like lava. Because of the contours of the work, the human form seems almost invisible, and yet my own body always remains the starting point.”
