Evenement Navigatie
During nighttime strolls around the city, Beate Bos takes photographs with her cellphone and prints them in large formats. Harsh flashes, surprising protagonists in the form of left behind beer bottles and fragments of texts are captured. Not people themselves, but what they leave behind is central in the images. They tell the story of someone who was there and left behind a message, intentionally or not. Garbage, stickers, graffiti tags or a faded poster tell their own tales and become the new protagonists of the night.
Bos never edits the photographs, but stays true to the raw quality of the snapshot, which corresponds with the rawness and directness of the city at night. As a film editor, Bos prints the photographs and assembles them to create a new image. Moments of happy coincidences and surprising combinations are what she is looking for, in which she acknowledges and uses the power already imbedded in the individual photograph. Existing images create new stories in combination with others, leaving it up to the public to give words to these narratives.
