Shadows of the atmosphere

Rië Tobori

6 July - 28 July

Evenement Navigatie

As an artist and educator, Rië Tobori utilizes her work to inspire others about body language through play and intuition. Visitors – or rather ‘participants’ – are therefore an essential part of the work and contribute to its realization.

Her fascination with how a body can sometimes convey more than words arose from her childhood, where she oscillated between two cultures and languages. In Japanese culture, where she often had to keep her words to herself, there was always an expectation to ‘read the air’ (Kuuki wo yomu). This means interpreting the atmosphere and postures of people and acting accordingly.

Tobori challenges visitors to engage in this game with her and test their own intuition.

In her works, she is constantly exploring what makes people move. She then translates this into interactive installation art. Visitors transform into shadows in her work, leaving only body language as a means of communication. Through digital echoes, a play of shadows emerges. The installation provides an experience through which Tobori aims to make participants aware of the influence of their body language.
